The layer you live with

Behind the walls. Part of every journey.

SM600L is a lightweight fibrous automotive acoustic absorber used in camper-van walls, ceilings, doors and cavities.

01

Acoustic absorption

Helps manage airborne sound within your vehicle. It is one component of the complete build.

02

Thermal insulation

A flexible insulation layer for the spaces behind your interior panels.

03

Hydrophobic fibres

Moisture-resistant fibres. Good ventilation and moisture management still matter.

Make the plan yours

A quieter space starts with a clear scope.

Map the surfaces before you choose a roll length.

01

Walls & ceiling

Measure the actual areas, subtract openings and allow for your cutting layout.

02

Doors & cavities

Confirm which spaces are included in your plan and leave room for vehicle hardware.

03

Floor is a separate decision

The estimates below cover walls and ceiling, not a load-bearing floor assembly.

Coverage before quantity

Your van. Your layout. Your starting point.

Use these Tec Vanlife merchant estimates to begin planning, then confirm against your own measurements.

50 linear ft · 250 sq ft gross

For vans without those windows, the merchant guide adds 10 linear feet. Mixed window layouts need individual measurement.

Estimates assume sliding-door and rear-door windows and cover walls and ceiling. They are not guaranteed fit quantities. Account for openings, doors, offcuts and your installation method.

60-inch roll coverage calculation An original schematic shows a roll unrolled to a rectangle five feet wide and one foot long. This rectangle provides five square feet of gross material, before cutting and offcuts. Understand the selling unit

One linear foot. Five square feet.

The material is 60 inches wide. Every foot of roll length gives five square feet of gross material.

A 50-linear-foot option therefore provides 250 square feet before cuts and offcuts. Quantity 1 means one of the selected length options. Check the length and pack quantity before adding to cart.

Prepared by Tec Vanlife

Full-size material. Compact for the journey.

Tec Vanlife, an official 3M distributor and part of the RoamLabX family, prepares the material for its next journey.

Tec Vanlife uses a specially engineered rolling machine to evenly compress 3M Thinsulate into compact rolls for shipping.

The image below shows the actual equipment. Compression changes the package size, not the purchased material quantity.

Know what arrives

Compressed to ship. Ready to plan around.

The material may arrive compressed and gradually recover its loft after unpacking.

Plan the available cavity depth and follow the appropriate installation method for your vehicle. Keep the white fibre side toward the van body and black scrim toward the interior.

Build a complementary insulation system

Duck Liner + Thinsulate. Different layers, shared purpose.

Duck Liner adds a self-adhesive, closed-cell sponge neoprene layer with a foil facing. SM600L adds flexible fibrous acoustic and thermal insulation in the cavities.

01

A layer against the body

The 3/8-inch Duck Liner provides thermal separation over the metal areas it covers and helps manage transmitted vibration and road noise.

02

Practical installation

Its adhesive backing lets you apply it to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces. Roll firmly for consistent contact.

03

Complementary coverage

Use Thinsulate for walls, ceilings, doors and irregular cavities. Plan both materials around your vehicle hardware and available depth.

Which layer goes first?

Tec Vanlife’s typical sequence is:

  1. Prepared van metal
  2. Adhesive-backed Duck Liner
  3. 3M Thinsulate SM600L
  4. Interior panel

This places Duck Liner nearer the metal, rather than simply laying it over Thinsulate. Confirm the assembly and adhesive compatibility for your build.

Reflective foil needs to face an air space to contribute a radiant-barrier effect. If the foil is covered by bonded insulation, do not assume that reflective benefit. This pairing is not a condensation-proof or complete vapour-barrier guarantee; ventilation and moisture management remain part of the build.

Before the build

A few practical questions.

How much should I order?

Use the van estimates as a starting point, then measure the actual wall, ceiling and door areas in your scope. Account for openings, cuts and offcuts. The table is not a fit guarantee.

What does “linear foot” mean?

One linear foot is a piece 12 inches long by 60 inches wide: five square feet of gross material. The selected variant specifies the total length in one pack.

Why does it arrive compressed?

Tec Vanlife uses specially engineered rolling machinery to evenly compress the material into compact rolls for shipping. Packaging compression does not change the material length you purchased.

Does it replace ventilation or moisture management?

No. Hydrophobic fibres resist moisture, but ventilation, exposed metal and the complete wall assembly still need to be considered.

Is the floor included in the van estimates?

No. These merchant estimates cover walls and ceiling. A load-bearing floor assembly requires its own material and structural plan.

Who is the official 3M distributor?

Tec Vanlife is an official 3M distributor. RoamLabX is part of the same brand family; this page offers the current RoamLabX store options.
